North
Bay, Ontario is a beautiful city located on the shores of Lake
Nipissing, a short 3 ½ drive from Toronto or Ottawa, bisected by lakes,
rivers and creeks, with sunny beaches, excellent summer and winter
fishing and plenty of opportunities for canoeing, sailing, kayaking,
wind surfing and pleasure boating. Located
at opposite ends of the city are two gorgeous lakes, suitable for all
types of boating activities. Lake Nipissing, ( 65 kms in length by 25
kms in width) and Trout Lake, ( 11 kms by 2 kms ). If you are looking for
fantastic fishing opportunities that are located in a beautiful
wilderness setting, Lake Nipissing is the premiere spot to fulfill your
requirements. Nipissing boasts an outstanding fishery that supports more
than 40 different species for all eager anglers to match wits with -
from the tiny smelt that run in the spring to the ferocious musky, the
fish that reigns supreme. The
prime game fish that is sought after by anglers in Nipissing is the
tasty walleye. The walleye is so plentiful in Nipissing that many
anglers remark that "catching your limit is considered a bad day of
fishing." Each year more than 157,000 walleye are harvested from
the lake by anglers. On average it takes an angler 1.9 hours to catch a
walleye; a great statistic for a fun-filled day of fishing. Although
the walleye is the most abundant and sought-after fish in the system,
many other important fish abound in high numbers. Respectable catches of
northern pike, yellow perch, smallmouth bass and musky add to the allure
of fishing the mighty Nipissing. How about trying your hand at herring,
ling, garpike or lake trout? If that's not enough, how about whitefish,
or largemouth, white bass and sunfish? Ice
fishing is a way of life for the thousands that flock each and every
year. This lake enjoys an extremely active winter fishery, and it is
considered to be one of the finest ice fishing lakes in the province by
the many experienced anglers that head to this "fishing mecca."
With more than 2,000 huts covering Nipissing's outer shell, there are
plenty of ice hut operators in the area, to provide you with everything
from licenses, equipment and bait, to traveling to the best locations
the lake has to offer. Some
of the most popular species that are targeted while on the hard water
are walleye, perch, pike and whitefish. There
is an abundance of lodges, cottages, bed and breakfasts and luxury
accommodations available to suit your purposes, as well as fast to
upscale dining, local
attractions and activities for the whole family.
